Semester 5

Design Studio V

The module is a design studio which emphasizes on the idea of ‘place making for the urban communities’. Students will undertake a studio-based exercise which deals with urban block within a dense urban environment. The emphasis in this module will be on exploring the notion of ‘place-making’ and architecture which respond to this notion. Developing your design thinking as an architectural narrative, forming proposals which are poetic expressions of ideas. Projects will not promote complex programmatic and organizational problems, but will rather allow in depth exploration and interpretations. In their preliminary design work, students engage with urban studies and strategy/concept development to develop an appropriate program and massing studies responding to the urban conditions. Subsequently, the major project involves the development of a design scheme which engages with the spirit of urban place and the everyday life of the urban community. The design work explores the plan-section-elevation relationship to achieve an architecture that acts as a vibrant block exploring the maximum potential of the urban space.

Building Technology I

In this module students will be exposed to a more extensive study of building construction by investigating the latest and more advanced technology and practice of the industry; from site analysis to all the advanced construction systems, energy efficiency, façade systems, architectural technology as well as the latest construction methods. In addition it also intends to expose students to the study of construction through case studies of existing buildings and applying the construction methods and systems of the building into their own design while addressing the issues pertaining to ecological impact.

Building Science II

Students are provided an understanding of building acoustics in relation to building design and construction. They are introduced to the field through acoustic history, practical measurements, sound insulation, reverberation, and noise, internal and external to the building. Students are also given the opportunity to use lux meter and sound pressure level meters to experience illuminance and sound level. Students are exposed to day lighting strategies, permanent and supplementary artificial lighting of interior, various types of artificial light sources,) and simple calculation to determine uniform lighting for interiors. This module is also integrated to architecture design Studio 5 (ARC 60306) to enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through application.

Theories of Architecture & Urbanism

The subject offers a thematic inquiry into architectural and urban theory in the broader context of philosophical schools of thought and cultural and social conditions, which may include modernism, postmodernism, phenomenology, semiotics, post-structuralism, deconstruction and critical regionalism. To engage students with relevant theories which have shaped cities and experience around architecture, including its role as mediator between our society and its architecture; To provide critical perspectives on key issues within the contemporary discourse of architecture, through integration of case-studies and theoretical studies; To enhance the understanding of the complexity of architecture and the ability to undertake independent research.

Food & Culture

Food and Culture is an elective module which aims to examine and explore how the act of food preparing and consuming influences space and place making in architecture through the act of research and on site experiences. It emphasized on the processes of experiencing, capturing, diagramming, and identifying the spatial relationship of food culture within community that shape its identity of their built environment.
