Project 1: Children Learning Capsule

In this first project, we are to identify several main aspects of the structure – use, size, design requirements, etc. Several key questions to be addressed:

  • Who is it for and how to ensure fit?

  • What kind of activities /uses are proposed?

  • How does the materiality respond to the natural elements of the physical environment?

  • How do we create composition with secondary reusable materials?

  • What are the characters of the crafted spaces?

In groups of 3, we are to discuss with our respective tutors with regards to the shipping containers and the selection of secondary repurposed materials for their design. In addition, each group is required to understand the needs of both children aged 7 to 12 and adolescents (13-17) and the adult minders that will constitute the ‘users’ of the Learning Capsule. From our findings, each group are to produce a design proposal for a Children Learning Capsule using 3 numbers of shipping containers measuring 2.44m(W) x 2.6m(H) x 6.06m (maximum size) within an area not exceeding 50 m sq and 7m (H).

Play · Share · Bond

Interplay between the object and the child makes his total world — play.  He exploits the vitality of his environment and draws upon his imagination to create his world. All that has changed ever since technology became a distraction to children nowadays. Their forms of amusement are heavily relied on electronic gadgets and computer games. They had lost that sense of exploration and discovery of the outside world. Therefore, to create a playscape, we want children to learn about the physical bonding and interaction with others, through a shared moment or memory experienced from playing. All the activities are suitable for all ages to participate, so there’s physical interaction between parents and their children. They can also gain new friends while playing with each other as most of the activities are group activities. They will learnt how to approach and engage with friends differently and friendly from how they meet new friends online. Most importantly, children has the opportunities to create their own memories from the time spent playing with friends and families. They will always appreciate and remember the moments and one day they will realize a closer bond has built upon their family and friends.
