Design Communication

Project 1: On-Site Sketching

We are required to engage with the site by experiencing it through a spatial sequence of our choice. While moving in sequence, we are required to record your observation and perception of the spaces and the human habitation of these spaces through free-hand sketches. This sequence must include both exterior and interior spaces.

Throughout this assignment, I have learnt to understand the notion of space in architecture and visualizing of space through observation and perception of a given site. I have also developed skills in sketching and communicating in different tonal and depth values like cross-hatching, stippling, hatching, etc.

 Project 2a: Orthographic Projections

We are required to produce a range of orthographic drawings of a selected building, which is Ex of In House, by Stephen Holl. The requirements are to produce the building's floor plans, 4 elevation drawings, 2 sections drawing and one site plan in a different scale from the others. All drawings must be drawn in 1:75 scale, excluding the site plan (1:200)

Through this assignment, I have learnt to communicate clarity and accuracy of drawn information like producing the best quality of line weights, line types, hand letterings, etc. I'm able to demonstrate skills, and understanding of orthographic projections in architectural documentation, recording and present clear and legible architectural information manually.

Project 2b: Axonometric Projection

For this exercise,  we have to use pencil and butter paper to generate an external axonometric drawing of the building. We have to refer to our orthographic drawings & the documents for measurements and information throughout this exercise. After having confidently constructed your drawing in pencil, we can proceed to trace our final ink drawing on tracing paper. We had two workshop sessions (read: one week) to produce the external axonometric. In the remainder four workshop sessions, we have to generate a sectional axonometric drawing showing both interior and exterior of the building.

Through this assignment, I have learnt to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of an axonometric projection. I understood the skills of developing axonometric projections, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation.

Project 2c: Perspectives

For this assignment, we are required to produce 2 different perspective drawings from the selected building Ex of In House. For two-point perspective, we have to identify an external view of the building which we are interested. This view can be selected from existing drawing and/or photographs. (You need to ensure that there is sufficient information to assist you in developing this one-point perspective). Then, construct a two-point perspective grid on a piece of butter paper. We have to reduce the drawing to fit A3 size before inking it onto the tracing paper. For one-point sectional perspective, we are required to first select what internal view we would like to sectionally cut within the building. You will also construct a one-point perspective grid rather than a two-point grid.

Through this exercise, I have learn to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of one-point and two-point perspectives. I have understood what perspectives (and its different types) are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation.
