Project 2: Tensile Membrane Construction

This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of construction and application from prior projects. Emphasis in producing related manual construction drawing detail and specification. One of the aims of this assignment is to develop an awareness and understanding of the strong inter-relationship between these two areas of study. Critical success of any design project relies on a designer’s ability to address issues of appropriate methods of construction, integration of structure and the selection of materials whilst addressing the many other complex issues that are part of the design process.

Our task is to find and analyse the floor plan and section plan on the construction of a 2-storey or 3-storey residential building. We are to analyze and propose 2 construction details from the building chosen, eg. Roof, Staircase, Wall, Window, Door and Floor slab. The construction method must consist use of either timber, steel, concrete or composite material shown in the section and details of the drawings. Our drawings must include the appropriate specifications, symbols, dimensions and the proposed materials clearly.

Skysong at ASU Campus // FTL Design Engineering Studio

The building we chose to study is called the Skysong tensile structure built in ASU Campus, USA. A 1.2 million square foot project used for commercial office space, retail, restaurant and hotel components along with the exceptional Skysong Apartments. Home to ASU Skysong, startups and Fortune 500 companies. Situated in the beautiful scenic area of Scottsdale, Arizona, this project is just a mere couple of minutes nearby to ASU campus. FTL in collaboration with Pei Cobb Freed & Partners (Architect for the Campus Buildings) designed the sculptural tensile structure as a center piece for the overall development, providing a shaded center courtyard with 4 plazas for cafes, restaurants and social interaction. The PTFE glass fabric structure is approximately 50,000 sq ft of area and opened in May 2009.
