ASSIGNMENT 3 -

CUBE MANIPULATION

INTRODUCTION

For this project, we are exploring on how to manipulate cubes based on the book, D.K. Ching Form, Space & Order. In groups of three (based on the last project grouping), we have to choose a keyword different from the previous one, based on the last song given (Aggressive).

Every week, we are required to make 3 models (15x15cm in size) that show our understanding of the techniques from the D.K Ching's book. For the final cube, it had to be 30x30cm in size, using different materials, which we have to explore. In total we had to make 12 (15x15) models and 1 (30x30) model.

PLAYING WITH MANIPULATION

During the process, we are figuring out on how to relate our keyword (Aggressive), with our manipulation technique. So, we decided to play with different manipulations by using slicing (subtraction), shifting & remain (addition), rotating grid (addition), etc.

FINAL OUTCOME

2nd Week Models

3rd Week Models

Materials Exploration

1st Week Models

12 models with different manipulation techniques :

1st row - Subtraction

2nd row - Addition

3rd row - Transformation

4th row - Final Cube Design with different materials

30cm x 30 cm Final Cube, combination of the 3 materials : wire mash + transparent sheet +satay stick

1 A1 Presentation Board to describe the final cube and the design process

From this project, I have learnt that cube manipulation is a form of geometric manipulation, it is not a sculpture or an artwork. The techniques which we learnt from D.K. Ching's book is the basic structure of design before we begin designing a building.

The tutorial was carried out like a workshop, making the model is done in class under lecturer's supervision. It created a better learning environment as we were to learn one type of transformation every week (making 3 models).

Overall, we did not really apply proper cube manipulation into our final cube, because we spend too much time to work on the mock up models and also experimenting the materials.
