INTRODUCTION

ASSIGNMENT 1 - EXPLORATION OF DESIGN ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES, COMPOSITION & PATTERN

The 1st assignment for design is to discover the meaning of design elements, principles, compositions & pattern, and learn how to apply them on architecture.

We are required to take photos based on each parts :

Design Elements

Design Principles

Design Compositions

Pattern Design

FINAL OUTCOME

SET A - DESIGN ELEMENTS

SET B - DESIGN PRINCIPLES

SET C - DESIGN COMPOSITION

SET D - PATTERN DESIGN

We have to research on the five elements, which are the Line, Shape, Form, Texture and Colour. Then, we had to take photos of natural and man-made objects that signifies each element. In total, I had to take 10 photos for this section.

For the principles of design, we have to research on Balance (Asymmetrical & Symmetrical), Unity & Harmony, Dynamic & Radial, Variety & Contrast, Emphasis & Hierarchy, Repetition & Rhythm. Then, we had to take elevation photos of the built environment, on each of the principles. There are 12 photos in total for this section.

For this part we had to take photos of people using different compositions: Golden Ratio & Rules of Thirds. We also have to arrange items for the Grid & Alignment section.

For the fiinal part, we had to manipulate geometric shapes, creating motives and patterns, as well as applying the colour theory to the patterns, based on what we have researched on section A.

I found this assignment interesting & important, as this is the basic fundamentals of design. I have learnt about the difference between design elements, principles & compositions, and most importantly, I knew how to apply them into everything.

For the last section, which is the pattern designing part, I have learnt how to create geometric patterns using a grid. I understood that patterns do not have to be limited in a boundary of a shape, but have to "design out of the box", so it'll look more interesting.
